Elijah Powell Dead
He was an Old-Time and Respected Resident- A Brief Sketch of His Life-The Funeral
--------
After an illness of less than two weeks, Mr. Elijah Powell, an old-time and respected resident of this community, died at his home in Rosalind addition last Monday evening, December 4th, about 10 o'clock.
Mr. Powell was engaged in doing representation work upon some mining claims, enjoying his usual good health, when he contracted a cold which developed into pnenmonia. For several days before his death he was very low and the end was momentarily expected, but he seemingly rallied and his family had hope that he would recover. Monday, however, he became gradually weaker until a few minutes before 10 o'clock, when he ceased to breathe and his spirit passed away.
Mr. Powell was a good man, respected and beloved by his neighbors and friends, and his death has caused deep sorrow among them. He was born in Chippewa township, Beaver county, Pennsylvania. September 26th, 1845, and leaves a wife, two daughters (Mrs. Lydia Lindquist and Mrs. Sadie Barrett of Butte) and two sons (Charles and Edward of this city) and two sisters and three brothers residing in Pennsylvania.
In July 1880, Mr Powell stettled in Philipsburg, having come up the Missouri River on the same boat with W.T. Allison (Rose Bud Steamboat. Arrived at Fort Benton on July 18, 1880. Powell family was deck passengers). His trade was stone and brick masonry and he was a first-class workman. Work at his trade being dull he engaged in mining, which pursuit he was following at the time of his death.
Mr. Powell served his country throughout the civil war, being a member of Pennsylvania regiment, and at the close he received an honorable discharge.
He was always proud of his coutnry and never failed to display his patriotism on all suitable occasions. He was a member of Burnside Post No. 22 G.A.R (Grand Army of the Republic) of this city.
The funeral took place from his late residence in Rosalind additon, yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The old soldiers gathered once more to participate in the last solemn rites at the grave of their departed comrade. The funeral procession was one of the largest seen in this city for many a day. Rev. J.B. Butter conducted the services at the family residence and at the grave. The impressive burial service of the G.A.R. was also read at the grave.
The flag for which fought now marks his resting place in Philipsburg cemetery, and a new mound has been added to the list of those which the old soldiers never fail to decorate with flowers and the national emblem on the recurrence of memorial day each year.'
