Death of Captain Nathan Powell.

Six years ago, Capt. Powell received a severe stroke of paralysis, from which he recovered sufficiently to be able to attend to business. Some weeks ago his symptoms grew more serious and last Sunday morning at six o'clock death came to his relief.

Capt. Powell was an old resident and was one of the most respected and successful business men that has lived in our city. The deceased was born in Frederick county Maryland, October 14th, 1814. His parents, at an early date, moved to Indiana and settled near Rising Sun. In 1839 he moved to Madison, and soon became largely interested in the river trade, shipping large quantities of produce to New Orleans and other points. He was also, for a number of years engaged in pork-packing. In 1848 he assisted in organizing the Madison Life, Fire and Marine Insurance Company, becoming its president. In 1865 the National Branch Bank was organized, of which institution he was president at the time of his death.

By his business tact and strict industry he acquired large wealth, with which he was liberal and generous. As a citizen, as a business man, and in his domestic life he is spoken of as a model man.

In 1846 he married Mary Francis Watts, daughter of Dr. Howard Watts of this city. Six sons and two daughters were born to them, all of whom survive him except two sons.

The funeral took place from his late residence on Main Cross street and the remains were interred at Fairmount.
