Arthur E. Potwine Dies At Home In East Windsor
Tobacco Grower and Former Tax Collector Is Dead at 79
East Windsor, March 6 - (Special) - Arthur E. Potwine, 79, a lifelong resident of East Windsor and formerly tax collector and chairman of the board of assessors in the town, died Wednesday afternoon at his home after a short illness.
He was born March 16, 1855, the son of the late Edwards L. and Mary (Bartlett) Potwine, and was a great grandson of the first pastor of the First Congregational Church, Windsor.
On October 18, 1876, Mr. Potwine marred Adella S. Bissell, who died two years ago. For many years he was active in the civic affairs of the community and town and served several terms as tax collector and nine years as chairman of the board of assessors. he was a Republican and served on the party's town committee for several years. Mr. Potwine was a tobacco grower.
He leaves behind four daughters, Miss Elizabeth B. Potwine and Mrs. Robert H. Barlett of East Windsor; Dr. Marjorie A. Potwine of Spartansburg, S.C., and Mrs. Harold B. Roe of Suffield; four sons, Thomas D. Potwine of Portland, Ore., Edwards A. Potwine of Chittenango, N.Y., Alfred F. and G. Stephen Potwine of East Windsor; and 19 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at his home. Rev. Virbrook Nutter, pastor of the First Congregational Church, of which Mr. Potwine was a member, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Scantic Cemetery.
