Wilma Marie (Porter) Cannon passed away Sept. 16, 2012 at Banner Lassen Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Wilma was born in Portland, Ore. Oct. 6, 1926 to Cline K. and Nellie S. (Griffith) Porter. She started the first grade in White Salmon, Wash., but due to her mother's poor health the family moved to Alturas, Calif. Wilma finished the first grade and went on to finish high school in Alturas. After graduating high school, Wilma moved back to Portland and worked as a secretary.
On Nov. 24, 1956, she married Chester David Cannon at the Methodist Church in St. Johns, a suburb of Portland. Chet and Wilma had known each other since the first grade.
To this union was born three sons, Timothy James, Phillip Michael (Mike) and Patrick Joseph (deceased). Wilma and Chet moved numerous times to accommodate Chet's career in the U.S. Forest Service. The family moved to Susanville in 1974.
Wilma found work at the Lassen County Times for a short period of time, using her skills as a typist. She became involved in the hospital auxiliary where she was a member and served as its president numerous times. But her passion became the hospital gift shop. She enjoyed working there, attending buying conventions and raising funds to help the hospital acquire equipment for more than 20 years.
She joined the United Methodist Church of Susanville in 1999 after the death of her husband, Chet. She became active in the United Methodist Women and enjoyed the friendships she developed with its members over the years. Wilma was also a member of the Red Hatters.
Wilma's husband and son, Patrick, preceded her in death.
Those to mourn her death are sons, Tim (Dana) and Mike; granddaughters, Annie Honea (Jeff) and Sarah Cannon; one grandson, Jesse Cannon; great-granddaughter, Lilah; and great-grandson, Liam — all of Susanville; sister-in-law and husband, Frank and Bonnie Forsberg, of Rocklin, Calif.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at the Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 and burial will be at the Alturas Cemetery by the side of her husband. No services are planned at graveside.
