VIRGINIA BEACH - Elizabeth Porter Bennett, born Dec. 28, 1907, died peacefully in her home Jan. 11, 2006. She was the widow of James Lawrence Bennett. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of Benjamin G. Porter and Minnie Estelle Stone of Norfolk. In early childhood, she moved with her parents to Virginia Beach. She graduated from Hollins College and received her master's degree from Columbia University, New York City. She was active in education and community affairs. She taught Latin at Montreat College, Montreat, N.C., and later taught at Country Day School and Norfolk Academy.
She is survived by a daughter, Anne Randolph Bennett; two sons, James L. Bennett Jr. and his wife Lorraine Bennett and Robert H. Bennett and his wife Katherine Lindsay Bennett; three grandchildren, Katie Darden Bennett, Robert Lindsay Bennett, all of Virginia Beach and Jennifer Lawrence Bennett of Seattle, Wash.
She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, which she attended since its beginning, her father being one of the founding elders. She also served as an elder and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Sunrise Circle of the King's Daughters, the Francis Land Chapter of the DAR, the Suffolk Chapter of Colonial Dames, the Princess Anne Country Club and a former member of the Linkhorn Park Garden Club.
Elizabeth was beloved by her family and children and touched many lives with her kindness and unselfishness. She was blessed by her friendship with Marguerite Wright and the care given to her by Annie De Grush, Michelle Cathon and Amy Leonhardt.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 36th St., Virginia Beach. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.
