Fatally injured when she either jumped or fell from a failroad trestle near Walton, Mrs. Florence Aldous, old time Lane county school teacher, died at Eugene Hospital Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Aldous was walking across the trestle, which bridges Wildcat Creek, and was within 15 feet of the end of the trestle when the engineer of an approaching Southern Pacific train saw her either fall or leap to the ground. The train was about 300 feet distant at the time. The engineer thought she had leaped safely, as the trestle at that point is about 8 or ten feet above the ground and not over the stream, but as the engine passed by he saw her lying on the rocks below. He stopped the train, and the injured woman was brought by train into Eugene. At the hospital it was discovered she had a broken shoulder, possibly a fractured skull, and one lung was punctured. Mrs. Aldous did not regain conciousness and the cause of the accident remains unknown. Trainmen said she had plently of time to reach the end of the trestle had she attempted to do so. It was thought, however, that she may have become frightened, and jumped without realizing she could walk off the trestle in safety. Deputy Coroner C.V. Simon and Special Agent Glemm Potwin of the Southern Pacific company investigated the accident at Walton Sunday afternoon. The accident occured Sunday morning. Mrs. Aldous was born June 3, 1854 in New York state. She had lived in Walton sine 1905.
