Elizabeth Nancy Porter was born in Pike County, Illinois. When she was not quite five years old, her parents decided to cross the Great Plains by covered wagon and settle in Oregon. Her father took his brother and various in-laws, and they made the arduous journey. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's mother, Sarah Porter, contracted mountain fever and died about a month after they arrived in the Willamette Valley. Sarah was the first person buried in what became the Aumsville Cemetery in Marion County. Elizabeth, only five years old, must have missed her terribly, but her mother's sister, Martha Coffey, moved in with the family to take care of Elizabeth and her brothers, who were all very young. Elizabeth's father married aunt Martha about a year later, and soon three new siblings were added to the family, to make seven children in all.
When she was 21, Elizabeth married the son of another pioneer family, Clifton Kitridge Read Jr., who had come four years after her family. They were married in Salem, Marion, Oregon on 20 October 1864. Elizabeth bore nine children, all of whom lived to adulthood. She was known for her religious feelings and kindness. She was a staunch Christian all her adult life. She died six days after her 79th birthday, August 27, 1922, at her home in Turner.
