Jack Polk
1927 - 2011

Long time Austin resident Jack Polk was born on January 15, 1927, in Wingate, Texas, to James Dalton and Eva Annette Stafford Polk. Being the youngest of seven brothers and two sisters, Jack was the last survivor of his siblings. Currently a resident of Georgetown, he passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, June 23, 2011.

Jack grew up on a farm in Wingate, Texas and graduated from Wingate High School. He attended Texas Tech University until he was drafted into the Army, where he served in the Corps of Engineers and was stationed in Japan during World War II. While a student at Texas Tech, Jack began his lifelong career in the automobile business by working part time at a Dodge dealership in the parts department. He quickly was promoted as parts manager.

After four years he became a partner in the Dodge dealership and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he operated a heavy-duty truck distribution center until 1959 when he purchased a Dodge dealership located at 803 West 5th Street in Austin. Later he built a new automobile complex, Dependable Motors, located on North I-35. He became one of the leading Dodge dealers in the nation, serving a term as President of the Dodge Advisory Council.

Because of his success as a Dodge dealer, he was invited numerous times to play in golf championships, including the Bob Hope Dessert Classic and other Pro-Am tournaments. He was known for his personalized television commercials.

Following the sale of Dependable Motors and the closing of his Winnebago dealership, Jack completed his 55-year career in the automobile business by returning to car sales at Centex Nissan, Round Rock Nissan and South Point Nissan, where he was named many times as Salesman of the Month and Year. He was a mentor and trainer to many new sales people.

Jack was active in the community, serving as President of the Austin Aqua Festival in 1969. He was a greeter at Hyde Park Baptist Church, where he was an active member and faithful teacher of a couples Sunday School class, New Beginnings.

Jack enjoyed music, singing in choirs and quartets as an adult and playing the mandolin since the age of three. He played his mandolin on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour when he was five years old. He shared his talents at church and in many nursing homes in the Austin area.

One of his favorite volunteer activities was the Earning by Learning program sponsored by the Austin Automobile Dealers Association. Jack looked forward to listening to Dawson Elementary School students as they read to him every week and showed improvement in their reading. He also served on the AISD vocational education advisory committee.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and daughter SuZan.

Jack is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his children - sons Mike (Mary Lou) of Round Rock, Kent (Judy) of Largo, FL, John (Susan), of Austin, daughter Annette Polk Shepherd (Steve) of Crawford, and their mother, Marye Polk of Pflugerville. "Daddy Jack" was cherished by Amy Nunley Bates (Phil) of Austin and Janica Polk Elkins (Brad) of Pflugerville. Jack is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
