"Josephine Mary Day

Josephine M. Day, a 40-year resident of North Palm Beach, FL. passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Hospice of Palm Beach County. She was 85.

Mrs. Day was born Josephine Mary Polito on November 27, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. She married Lt. Fred Carsten of Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1943. They had one daughter, Ellen Jane. Lt. Carsten died tragically in 1948.

On June 18, 1950, Josephine married Col. John F. Day Jr. in Ft. Sill, OK. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000. They had two sons, Robert Francis Day and James Russell (Rusty) Day.

The Day family lived in North Carolina, Japan, and Connecticut before moving to Palm Beach County in 1963. They were active members of the North Palm Beach Country Club where they enjoyed golf, bridge, and the social scene. Jo was an award-winning artist known for her oil and watercolor landscapes and marine scenes. Her studio was located at Gallery One in Lake Park for many years. Jo was an avid fisherwoman who enjoyed many hours on the family boat where she infected her two sons with an addiction to fishing. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and her incredible lasagna.

Jo is survived by her two sons, Rusty Day of North Palm Beach, FL, and Robert F. Day of Morgan Hill, CA, one daughter, Ellen Jane Nielsen of Holstebro, Denmark, one stepson, John F. Day III of Los Altos, CA, and one sister, Helen Montgomery of Colorado Springs, CO. She has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at Royal Palm Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5601 Greenwood Avenue, West Palm Beach, Fl.; with the Rev. G. Kerry Robb, Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in her memory be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County or a charity of your choice."
