John was the seventh child of John Martin and Alice Louise (Humphreys) Polhemus. His siblings were Mattie, who died in infancy about four years before John was born, Arthur James, Carrie, Winifred Odessa,George Nelson, Charles Stevens, and Alice Josephine, who was born about two years after his death.
The newspaper reported that he was two months old when he died; however, Prairie Home Cemetery records show he was 17 weeks old. The Bible entry his father made indicates that he died 20 February 1901. Prairie Home Cemetery records indicate the date as 19 February 1901. His father may have been distraught when entering the date in the Bible, or perhaps he wrote in in awhile after the fact. Based on the 19 February 1890 date shown in the cemetery records, John would have been born on or within a few days either side of 27 October 1890.
