June Poindexter Bayton

BAYTON, June Poindexter, 90, more recently of Richmond, died April 14, 2011, in a Richmond hospital. Shortly after midnight surrounded by loving family, our mother's soul winged its way up to heaven. She was predeceased by her parents, Janie and John Poindexter; her loving and devoted husband of 54 years, Dr. Ernest Linwood Bayton Jr.; and a sister, Jean P. Driver. Survivors include her daughter, Linda B. de Treville and husband, Jack, of Richmond; her son, Robert Bayton and wife, Debra, of Williamsburg; and a granddaughter, Lauren de Treville of Richmond, whom she loved dearly. Also surviving her are four siblings, Jack Poindexter (Edith) of Long Island, Va., and Coleen Andrews, John Poindexter (Betty) and Harriett Mason (John), all of Phenix, Va.; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Mom was born on the family's Charlotte County farm at Old Well on June 25, 1920, in the midst of wheat harvest. She and her five siblings grew up on the farm. She attended business school, and at the age of 20 found a job in Portsmouth. There she met her future husband and it was love at first sight. They married on the eve of WW II. After a three-year separation due to the war, they settled in Portsmouth, built their home, and raised their family. After the loss of her husband, she remained in their home of 62 years until she moved to Richmond to be near her family. Her sister, Coleen, said, "June bloomed wherever she was planted." June was an elegant and gracious lady with a keen sense of humor and a positive attitude. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church in her youth and a member of Calvary Baptist Church for the next 70 years. Above all she cherished her family and valued the close relationships with her brothers and sisters. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour before the service. Contributions may be made to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia.
