West Sussex, England
|Death: ||Dec. 26, 1352, England|
Posthumous son of Edmund of Woodstock and Margaret Wake, Edmund being hung for treason at the orders of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, just three weeks before his birth at Arundel Castle. When his brother Edmund died, John received the title of the 3rd Earl of Kent and Lord Woodstock. When his mother died of the plague on Sept 19, 1349, he succeeded to the title of Baron Wake of Liddell. John finally became of age and received livery of all his lands three weeks later on April 10, 1351.
John married by Papal dispensation, Isabella/Elisabeth von Jülich on 3 April 1348, the daughter of William V, Duke of Jülich and Joanna of Hainaut, a younger sister of Queen consort Philippa of Hainault. They had no children, and he died by the age of 22. Isabella would die June 6, 1411.
John's title passed on to his only sister, Joan of Kent, the mother of King Richard II of England, who became the 4th Countess of Kent, and the 5th Baroness Wake of Liddell suo jure, in her own right.
