Joe Weldon Pittman, 90, a resident of Las Vegas since 1935, died Nov. 24. He was born on the river bottom at Mineral Wells, Texas, and worked at the Boulder Dam Hotel, where he chauffeured "the stars" and met his wife, who worked as a waitress.
After opening a bar in Nelson, he worked at the Monte Carlo, the Las Vegas Club and the Apache. In 1952, he opened the Sahara Hotel as the bar manager. He also owned and operated the Cedar Bar, Nut Hut and Vegas Liquors.
He ended his career at the age of 82 at the Showboat. Joe was a self-made, independent thinker who made people feel good and lived life to the fullest.
A memorial service took place Nov. 27 at the Italian American Club in Las Vegas. He is survived by his wife, Anne Pittman; two daughters, 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
