Joseph Marshall Byrd Pittman was the brother of Rene Marion Pittman, my 2XGreat Grandfather, and the youngest child of Ichabod Byrd and Frances J. Stone Pittman.

He married Elizabeth Harriett Stone, who was his first cousin, daughter of his mothers brother Washington W. Stone. They had twelve children with two sets of twins. The first set of boy twins died at birth, leaving ten of their children living to adulthood.

His father died at age 47, leaving his mother Francis Jackson Stone Pittman a widow until her death thirty years later. She lived with Joseph at the time of her death in 1857.

Joseph is buried in the Howell Family Cemetery along with his brother Rene Marion and Mary Anne Howell Pittman. Mary Anne was the daughter of Isaac Howell for whom the cemetery was established and named.
