|Birth: ||Jul. 16, 1882|
|Death: ||May 17, 1922|
John Richard Pittman was the second of five children born to Albert Singleton and Sarah J (Pope) Pittman. The family had a farm in Cox's District, Cobb County, Georgia, according to the 1880 census. By 1900 he was helping on the farm.
In 1909, he married Bessie A Queen, daughter of Adolphus and Eula Bell (Hooper) Queen. They lived at 143 Lawton Street, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1910, while he worked as a street car conductor and she kept house.
John and Bessie had one child, John Reynolds Pittman, who was born in 1915 and died two years later. As you can imagine, the young couple was devastated.
When John registered for the WWI draft on Sept. 12, 1918, he was living in Austell, Cobb county, and Bessie was living at 759 Gorby, Atlanta, Fulton county. The 1920 census has him listed as living on the farm off the Douglasville-Atlanta Road in Howell District, Cobb county. He was working as a merchant in a general store. Bessie was living with her grandmother, Cynthia Queen, at 110 Johnston Avenue, Atlanta, and working as a seamstress in a pants factory. They were both still married at the time.
According to the Georgia death records, John passed away on 17 May 1922 from Tuberculosis and was said to be single and a farmer. His death certificate was witnessed by his brother Autrey Wells Pittman. He was buried in the Howell family cemetery near Mableton. His tombstone, however, has his death date as 17 May 1921. We do not as yet have a copy of the obituary to determine which is the correct year.
