Marjorie A. Mathers, 83, died peacefully Sunday, May 2, 2004, at home in Spearfish, SD. Funeral services for Marjorie will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish. Burial will be at Masonic Memorial Gardens, Reno, NV. A Memorial has been established for Hospice of the Northern Hills. Marjorie was born July 13, 1920, in Farmington, NM, to Whitney and Anna Edith (Whittecar) Pittman. She was raised in Durango and Colorado Springs, CO, where she graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1938. Marjorie was an accomplished athlete in the early days of women's sports. She won her high school Girls' Athletic Association Cup, setting a new record. She was Worthy Advisor and a Colorado State Officer of Rainbow Girls and was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors. She attended Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, CO, and was a member of the Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority. She married Rodney "Harold" Mathers in Colorado Springs, on February 7, 1943. After WWII, they moved to Pasadena, CA, where she worked for University of Southern California in accounting. She later was an independent contractor for the then high-tech firm of Remington Rand, helping many companies change from hand to machine bookkeeping. During that time she had her two children, Steven and Carol Mathers. The family moved to Carmichael, CA, Lake Tahoe, NV, and Carson City, NV. She graduated from LaSalle University of Interior Decorating and did interior decorating for several years. She later lived in Reno, NV, Rapid City and Spearfish, SD, where she spent the last six months of her life under the loving care of family and Hospice of the Northern Hills. Marjorie was a member of Order of Eastern Star and Lions. Marjorie enjoyed swimming, hiking, bowling, bridge, and other games with friends and family. She is survived by her son Steven and wife Merry Mathers, Reno, NV; her daughter Carol and husband Tom Erlandson; five grandchildren-Tyler and Lindsay Mathers and Jason Hansen, all Reno, NV; Eric and wife Michelle Erlandson, Rapid City, SD; and Evan Erlandson, Spearfish, SD; one great grandchild, Lexiana Erlandson, Rapid City, SD; one niece Shirley (Mathers) Shurtleff, Austin, TX; one nephew Kenneth Mathers Jr., of Pagosa Springs, CO; and one cousin Donnie Ritchie, Greeley, CO She was preceded in death by her parents, Whitney and Anna Pittman, and her husband Rodney "Harold" Mathers. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.
