Birth: Nov. 5, 1910
Stone Mountain
DeKalb County
Georgia, USA
Death: May 17, 1986
Salt Lake City

Hazel was the only surviving child of Warner Carlton and Mamie Sheppard Pittard. Her Mother died when she was 6, and her father married Mamie King 2 years later, and they had Hilda, Dorothy Nell and Mamie Ruth. Dorothy died before she was 2 years old. From about 20 to 30 years of age, Hazel worked at all sorts of stores known as "nickel and dime" stores and traveled all around the east coast with girl friends that she kept up with until her death. She married George R. Clark, US Army, 25 Nov. 1940. He was stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta at the time. Their only child, Anne, was born at "Fort Mac" and his Mother died there. Hazel did not want to go to Germany with George as part of the after-the-war occupation forces, and that seemed to be what broke them up. They were divorced in 1948. She raised her daughter basically on her own, working in various department stores. She had many, many friends and relatives, and kept in touch with them all her life. She moved to Utah in 1980, near her daughter and grandchildren, and died there in 1986. She donated her body to the University of Utah medical program, and when they had used the body as much as possible, her ashes were placed in the casket at the Salt Lake City Cemetery which is used for that purpose. Her name will never be on a tombstone, so this is a wonderful way to remember her.

Mama, I love you so much, and wish you were still around. I understand now your physical limitations, because I have them too, with a few extra thrown in. I wish I had all the friends you did, because now I feel very lonely. All my love,
- Anne
