Mildred P. Pipkin
(January 25, 1918 - August 13, 2008)
Mrs. Mildred P. Pipkin, 90, of Waycross died early Wednesday morning at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Wrightsville, (Johnson Co) Georgia to the late Lake R. Peddy and Lula Poole Peddy.
Mrs. Pipkin spent most of her early years in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Waycross in 1941. She attended Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia with a major in English. For the majority of her life, Mrs. Pipkin was a partner with her husband in his business and Christian ministry. She was a member of Central Baptist Church until 1961. From there she followed her husband, Rev. Walter L. Pipkin, as he pastored Rehobeth Baptist Church from 1961-1984, and Shady Grove Baptist Church for the next five years. Upon his retirement Rev. and Mrs. Pipkin returned to Central Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for over 60 years and was very active in the Women's Missionary Union. Mrs. Pipkin even wrote a play commemorating the WMU's 100th anniversary. Mrs. Pipkin was very active in the church's community outreach, visiting shut-ins and nursing homes in the Waycross area. For a week over several summers she would house children in her home from the Georgia Baptist Children's Home. Mrs. Pipkin was an active member of the Eastern Star for many years. She loved to spend her spare time doing yard work. Her children and grandchildren will remember her most for her love and service to the churches where she served, her emphasis on the importance of education, and her devotion to family. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Walter L. Pipkin and a son-in-law, Dr. Robert H. Garner.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret P. Garner of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, two sons, Kenneth L. Pipkin and his wife Mary of Brunswick, Georgia, Marvin L. Pipkin and his wife Carolyn of St. Simons Island, Georgia, her grandchildren, Susan P. Lisenby and her husband Steve of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Walter L. Pipken and his wife Bayla of Augusta, Georgia, Steven L. Pipkin of Brunswick, Georgia, Tye L. Pipkin and his wife Tallie of St. Simons Island, Georgia, C. Baker Pipkin of Los Angeles, California, Mark D. Garner and his wife Holli of Birmingham, Alabama, R. David Garner and his wife Lee Anne of New Orleans, Louisiana, Jon W. Garner of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Benjamin P. Garner of Crystal River, Florida, Thomas W. Garner of Orlando, Florida, her great grandchildren, Bennett Lisenby, Elizabeth Pipkin, William Pipkin, Emery Pipkin, Thomas L. Pipkin, Sara Baker Pipkin, Gibson R. Garner, Mary Frances Garner, Robert C. Garner and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice Satilla, 317 Plant Ave., Waycross, Georgia 31501.
