Donald Francis Piper, 84, Duncansville, died early Friday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove.
He was born in Duncansville, son of the late Irvin C. and Margaret Pearl (Claar) Piper. He married Jean Hoover in 1966 in Roaring Spring.
Surviving are his wife; three sons: Rick (Irene Brumbaugh) of Seattle, Wash., Gary of East Freedom and Jeff of Altoona; a daughter, Cheryl (Kevin) Smith of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Riki Strough, Jodi Piper, Jessica Piper, Todd Piper, Christopher Piper, Brianna Piper and Dr. Eliot Fagley; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Donna (Dick) Shultz and Doris Peterson, both of Hollidaysburg; and a sister-in-law, Ruth (Norman) Walls and her children, Rachel Amanda Walls in New York, Gregory (Amanda) Walls of Loretto and Jim and Mary Hoover of Hollidaysburg and their children, Michael and Ashley.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; three brothers: Gerald Butler and Irvin and J. Calvin Piper; and two sisters: Janet Bowser and Margaret Hoefler.
Don attended Hollidaysburg High School and worked on the family farm in Dry Run and at Swopes Feed Mill and Esso. He also worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central Railroad and Penn Central and retired from Conrail in 1984. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving aboard the USS Kalmia.
Don was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg. He was an avid hunter and was treasurer of the Greenwood Rod and Gun Club. He and his wife owned a tack shop, Jean's Rocking Horse, in Martinsburg and Woodbury. He loved his horse, Randy, and enjoyed trail riding.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, and at 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Liebegott-Brown Funeral Home Inc., 1218 Fourth Ave., Duncansville, Pastor Jack Moyer officiating. Interment with military honors assisted by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
