Son of Samuel Mills Pine, a carriage maker, and Francis Gertrude Gildersleeve, husband of Anna R. Conkling, whom he married about 1862, and father of Anna B., Florence Alma (married Bebb), and Fanny Pine.

Husband of Elsie Ann Sylvester and father of Sylvester Nicholas (married Frances Belle Howe, married Martha M. Melcher), Elsie G. and Herbert Pine.

In 1850, Nicholas could be found living in the home of his parents in Hempstead, Queens with siblings; Frances G., Albert B. and Mary E. Pine. His father was shown as a carriage maker.

Around 1862, Nicholas married Anna R. Conkling, the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah E. Conkling.

In 1863, Nicholas registered for military service in Kings County, Brooklyn, stating that he was of 121 Willoughby Avenue, aged 28, a bookkeeper, and married.

In 1870, Nicholas, 33, and Anna, aged 34, were living in East Orange, Essex, NJ, with children Florence, Anna and Fannie Pine. Nicholas was in the oil clothing business. Also in the home was Anna's father, Nathaniel Conklin, aged 69, a dentist, and her mother, Sarah, aged 69.

By 1880, his first wife had died, and he had remarried, to Elsie Ann Sylvester, was living in Newton, Mass., and was employed in furnishing goods. He stated that he was born on Long Island, aged 40, and living with he and his new wife were children; Florence A., Anna B., Fannie, from his first marriage, and Sylvester and Elsie from his second marriage.

In 1881, his daughter, Anna B. Pine, died in Massachusetts.

By 1900, the couple and their children had moved to Chicago, Ill., living on Princeton Avenue. Living in the household with Nicholas and Elsie, was son, Sylvester, aged 22, daughter Elsie, aged 20, and son Herbert, aged 15. Nicholas was employed as a salesman.

In 1910, still on Princeton Avenue, Nicholas was shown as a salesman of chemistry goods, and his daughter, Elsie was shown as a photographer.

In 1920, Nicholas, now 85, could be found at the Chicago State Hospital For The Insane, on 64th Avenue and Irving Park Boulevard. It showed him still married.

Nicholas died on the 8th of May, 1921 in Norwood Park, Cook County, Ill., and he was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery on the 12th of May, 1921.
