Excerpt from article "Tablet Unveiled On Old Moravian Church" transcribe Zebulon Pearson's gravestone as well as some of the background on the tablet & its' Moravian history of the church, published in "The Monitor-Register" newspaper of Woodstown, Salem Co, NJ on Friday, September 6, 1907:
"The tablet was presented on behalf of the Gloucester County Historical Society by Hon. John Boyd Avis, of Woodbury, State Senator from Gloucester County, and a lineal descendant of George Avis, who gave the ground for the church in 1747. Senator Avis said he was glad to stand on soil once possessed by his ancestors, and of participating in the exercises attendant upon the unveiling and presentation of this beautiful tablet.
In presenting Mr. Henry Shiveler to unveil the tablet, Dr. Halsey said: There is here to-day a man who has been closely allied with this church for more than a quarter of a century; having held service here every Sunday for thirty years, for the children. There is a mutual honor attached to this. To him that he has the privilege to unveil this tablet. To us that we have so faithful a man to take part in these ceremonies.
The tablet had been set in the face of the wall of the church, and was covered by American flags, these Mr. Shiviler drew aside exposing the tablet.
The tablet was received on behalf of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Diocese of New Jersey by Rev. Charles M. Perkins, of Vineland, Dean of the Diocese.
The tablet bears the following inscription:
'Near this site, A. D. 1747, the Moravians erected a log church, which was dedicated August 31, 1749, O. S., by Bishop A. G. Spangenberg.
The construction of this church was begun in June, 1786, and dedicated July 5, 1789, by Bishop J. Ettwein.
The property was conveyed to the Protestant Episcopal Church of New Jersey, October 15, 1836.
The Gloucester County Historical Society placed this tablet August 31, 1907.'
Rev. W. N. Schwartze, Professor of History, Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pa., made an interesting historical address on the old Church, but its length forbids its publication until next week. He was followed by Mrs. George B. Macaltioner, of Woodstown, with some interesting reminiscences of the "Early Ministers and People".
After the exercises were over the writer walked through the burial ground in the rear of the ancient church. There we found quite a number of gravestones, remarkably well preserved, after more than one hundred years of exposure to the elements. One attracted particular attention, being set flat in the ground, and bearing the inscription: "Zebulon Pearson, died January 8, 1888, aged 20 years"" (age in article is a possible error)
Note: several gravestones that were transcribed before & after this one in the article have been ommitted & transcribed on their own memorial
