R.H. Pierce

Robert Henry Pierce was born in Jefferson, Cass County,* Texas on June 10, 1850. He died in a Dallas hospital January 13, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 3 days. His early days were spent in East Texas, where he married Miss Mary Frances Latham on the day Temple, Texas Townsite was sold. To this union were born 14 children, 11 of whom survive. 10 sons and one daughter: L. J., J. T., R. L., Paul, M. B. and Sammie Pierce, all of Dallas; R. H. Pierce Jr., Clyde; L. and L. A. Pierce, Bomartin; L. B. Pierce, Comanche; and Mrs. R. L. Cox, Rule. There are 31 Grandchildren and 17 Great-Grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his departure. Mr. Pierce moved to the Indian Territory when he was a young man and stayed there for one year. He then moved to Grapevine and then from Grapevine to the Bomartin community 29 years ago. He was a public spirited citizen and a sacrificing neighbor to a number of relatives and friends all these years. Ill health overtook Mr. Pierce about a year ago last October. He then moved to the home of his son Lazrus, from which he made brief visits to the homes of the other children. It was while he was visiting that the last call came. He was in Dallas and died there. He was brought back to Bomartin where the body was laid to rest in Bomartin cemetery. Mr. Pierce was baptized when he was a mere lad, but was converted last October under the ministry of Marvin E. Fisher. Funeral services were held by Rev. L. M. Napper, pastor of the Methodist church, and assisted by Rev. Stevens of the Bomartin Baptist church and Rev. Grey of the Corn Baptist church. Pall Bearers were: D. A. Bowles, R. L. Witty, A. M. Huskinson, O. Parks, J. H. Thomas and Lester Martin. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved in this hour.

*Jefferson was the seat of Cass County from 1846 to 1852, and was named seat of the new county of Marion in 1860.
