Ben, beloved husband of Jesse Cox.
Father of Audrey, Verna, Dorothy, Ruth & Tom and two babies who died in infancy. Fun-loving Grandpa to a whole passle of grandchildren.
Benjamin Frederick Phipps was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England in 1903 to Harriet Ellen Phipps (nee Bradley)(b: March 15 1877; d: April 22, 1950) and Frederick Thomas Phipps (b: December 28, 1880; d: January 1, 1951). The family moved to Canada in 1913. His sister, Nellie Violet Phipps was born on February 20, 1907 and passed away at the young age of 30 on June 20, 1937. His sister Dorothy Lillian Phipps Mulholland passed away in 1972.
Grandpa was a baker and his bakery was on Danforth Avenue in Scarborough Canada. Grandma and eldest child, Audrey, tended the store front while Grandpa baked everything from meat pies and bread to the greatest fern tarts ever made. His daughter Verna was called "Buns" by the locals! Phipps Bakery was a neighbourhood mainstay for many years and during the depression and the war years, Grandpa made sure his neighbours were kept well fed with bread, buns, meat pies, apple pies and other baked goods - all free of charge.
A fabulous Grandpa - I'll never forget Christmas at Grandmas and Grandpas. Grandpa had the most fantastic sense of humour and loved setting things in motion, only to sit back and watch the craziness that followed!! One Christmas Day Grandma scolded him for wearing only an undershirt and pants and pleaded with him to put a shirt and tie on. Grandpa disappeared into the bedroom only to emerge still wearing his undershirt, but wearing a beautiful tie and bowler hat! It was one of those "you had to be there" moments and the entire family was in hysterics at Grandma's reaction. Oh how his eyes twinkled!! All of us grandkids adored him (the biggest kid of them all).
Grandpa suffered a massive stroke about 2 weeks after his beloved dog Fifi was killed by a hit and run driver. Fifi was his constant companion and never left his side. Grandpa never recovered and died about 6 weeks later. I was young, but I will never forget the sorrow in his big brown eyes a couple of days before he died. Forever missed.
