Gladys Batten Philpot, 96, of White Road, King, formerly of Heritage Woods Retirement Home, Winston-Salem, and the Tyro Community, Lexington, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Tyro United Methodist Church, where she was a member, by the Revs. Claude Kayler and Tim Roberts. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
Mrs. Philpot was born Nov. 18, 1907, in Monroe County, Ohio, to Ernest and Minnie Green Batten. She was the third of their 13 children. She was married on Aug. 3, 1930, to George Carlin Philpot. After her marriage, she taught first and second grade in Summerfield, Ohio, and later in Hilliard, Ohio. She was a member of the Mary Wilson Sunday School Class at her church and a member of the Summerfield, Ohio Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years in August 1990; four brothers, Arthur Batten, Forrest Batten, Chester Batten and Robert Batten; and three sisters, Edith Craig, Bernice Clark and Juanita Bates.
Surviving are a son, Laurence Carlin "Larry" Philpot and his wife, Sarah, of Lexington; a daughter, Mary Margaret Hothem and her husband, Wayne, of Dobson; three sisters, Olive Doyle of Miami Springs, Fla., Clarice Kost of Tulsa, Okla., and Betty Belcher of Shady Cove, Ore.; six grandchildren, Nancy Hothem Hughes and her husband, David, of Fairfax, Va., Carolyn Hothem Gajewski and her husband, John, of Newfields, N.H., David Hothem of Arlington, Va., Laura Philpot and her husband, Guy Williams, of Winston-Salem, Andrew Philpot and his wife, Janna, of South Pasadena, Calif., and Timothy Philpot of Doylestown, Pa.; six great-grandchildren, Daniel and Riley Hothem, Lucas, Sarah and William Gajewski and Theodore Philpot; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jordan Williams and Anne Williams Wood and her husband, Alan; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Challie and Emily Wood.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the home of the son, Laurence Carlin "Larry" Philpot, 285 Siouan Drive, Lexington, N.C. 27295.
