The Danville Commercial Dailey, Danville, Illinois, August 20, 1956

A Danville couple and a Sidell woman were killed and four others injured at 9:30 a.m. sunday in a two-car collision on Route 49, one mile south of Allerton. Dead are Sidney E. Allen, 71, of 615 S. Bowman Ave., Danville; his wife Bertha, 70 and Emily Hooker Wilson of Sidell. Injured were Arthur Millis of Urbana, who is listed in critical condition; his wife Frances; Richard H. Tarvin, 24 of near Rantoul; and his wife Mary.Scene of the accident was "four county corner" a country road intersection with Route 49 south of Allerton where Vermilion, Edgar, Champaign and Douglas Counties join. Tarvin was the driver of the southbound vehicle on Route 49 occupied by his wife and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mullis. Mr. Allen was the driver of the second automoble which was westbound on a country road, reported to be a detour off the Sidell Allerton Road which is being repaired. State Policeman Wayne Ballew who investigated said that Tarvin reported to him that he was traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour on the state highway when the Allen automobile "came out of the blue sky" Ballew said, apparently Allen failed to stop for a stop sign. THROWN FROM AUTO Mrs. Wilson of Sidell was thrown from the Allen vehicle and was killed instantly. Mr. and Mrs. Allen were transported in the Dicks ambulance from Broadlands to Jarman Hospital in Tuscola where Mrs. Allen was pronounced dead a short time after being admitted. Mr. Allen was listed in critical on admission to the hospital and died a short time later. The other injured were transported to Carle Memorial Hospital in Urbana in the Renner ambulance of Urbana. En route to the hospital the ambulance had a mechanical failure which delayed the victims arrival. INJURIES REPORTED According to witnesses at the scene Tarvin suffered cuts about the face; his wife had a cut on the nose and temple and Mrs. Mullis was believed to have suffered a broken leg. Mullis was listed only as having possible internal injuries. Full extent of their injuries were not released by the Carle Hospital as a matter of policy. Both the 1953 model auto driven by Tarvin and the 1947 or 1948 model car driven by Allen were demolished. Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the occupants of both autos apparently were enroute to picnics as picnic fare was strewn about.
