Services for Bobby Ray Phillips of Tyler, who celebrated 81 years of triumphant life, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the chapel of Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit funeral home . Mr. Phillips departed this world Monday, May 9 to journey to his final resting place after a difficult illness. Rev. Kim Beckham will officiate at the services and burial will follow in Tyler Memorial Park. Mr. Phillips was born in Mt. Zion, Texas, January 28, 1935, to Charles and Grace Phillips. He attended Tyler schools and grew up working in the family grocery business at Phillips Grocery in Tyler. Joining the U.S. Army in 1952, he proudly served his country in the Korean War and retired as a Master Sergeant with 22 years of service, receiving numerous awards and honors during his career. Following his retirement he returned to Tyler and worked again in the family grocery store until 1981 when employed by the University of Texas Health Center (UTHC) at Tyler. After a second retirement, he also worked with Cellular Communications. Mr. Phillips was a proud member of Central Baptist Church of Tyler for 73 years, where he worked in the bus ministry and was an active member of the Fellowship Class. He was known for his community service working for the disadvantaged and homeless and volunteering in multiple community programs including volunteering at the VA, AARP, Habitat for Humanity and many Christian projects. He was always happy to lend a helping hand to others in need. Mr. Phillips was also an active member of the Rambler's Camping Club of Tyler. He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, his parents, six brothers and two sisters, the last of his family to pass. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Phillips of Tyler; his daughter, Carla and her husband, Keith Land; his only grandson, Kyle, all of Corpus Christi; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Crabtree, Donna Floyd (Rick), Sylvia Wyly (Dan), Shirley Phillips and Tamza DeCharles; many nieces and nephews and a host of dear and loving friends. Pallbearers will include Anthony Phillips, Ben Phillips, Robert Rice, Brett Langford, Rodney Ray and Paul David Phillips. Honorary pallbearers are the men of the Fellowship Class at Central Baptist Church and Kyle, Keith and Jason Land.
