Margaret Phillips was born on 12 August 1903 in Jackson County, North Carolina, the eldest daughter of James M. Phillips (1873-1955) and Mary Rachel Parker Phillips (1883-1957). She was married to Elbert Hall "Eb" Coward (1883-1966) sometime after 1940. She was widowed when he died on 18 May 1966. She died on 24 February 1992 in Sylva, NC at the age of 88, and was buried next to her husband at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
