Maria Phelps, 70, of New Castle passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 after an extended illness.
She was born January 21st, 1939 in Muncie and was the daughter of the late John Vargas and Ruth Vargas Robinson.
She attended the Shaffer Chapel A.M.E. Church in Muncie. Maria was an accomplished seamstress and also upholstered furniture. She was a creative person and enjoyed writing poetry and drawing. She loved music. She also loved to sing and play guitar. Maria was a mechanically inclined person and could fix almost anything. She loved the Lord and enjoyed watching Christian programing. She also was a very good cook and baker. Maria loved the holidays, especially Christmas. She had a great love for children and was "Mom" to many. Most of all, however, she loved her family. Spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren brought her happiness. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Vernon L. Phelps Sr., whom she married June 21st, 1957; four daughters, Valesa Watts of Indianapolis, Angel Gray of New Castle, Karen Jean Goins of New Castle and Julie (husband-Rickie) Clark of Indianapolis; four sons, Vernon (wife-Carol) Phelps Jr. of Bowling Green, KY., John Phelps of Indianapolis, twin sons, Kyle (wife-Maria) Phelps and Kelly (wife-Andrea) Phelps, both of Dayton, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene Vargas and Benito (wife-Yolanda) Vargas both of Muncie; nine sisters, Deloris (husband-Carl) Rhinehart, Rosita McKay, Elena (husband-Fod) Crim, Jesusa (husband-Harvester) Pryor and Carmelita (husband-Talford) Campbell all of Muncie, Marselina (husband-Leon) Pettiford and Vida (husband-Jim) Burton both of Marion, Victoria (husband-James) Campbell and Anita (husband-Ed) Smith both of Indianapolis. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Margerita Vargas and Luisa Valdez and two brothers, John Vargas Jr. and Poncho Garcia.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no public calling. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, Westlawn Addition.
