Charles J. Pheiffer, 94, of Davenport, formerly of Monmouth and Alexis, joined his Heavenly Father, 11:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Genesis West, Davenport.
Cremation will be accorded and memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth. Interment of cremated remains will follow the memorial service in Henderson Grove Cemetery next to Messiah Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorials be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, Henderson Grove, 2092 Knox Road 150E, Galesburg, IL 61401.
He was born July 29, 1913, in Pinckneyvile, Ill., the son of Frank and Ester Bahre Pheiffer. Charles married Pauline M. Peterson on Jan. 10, 1937, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Henderson Grove. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
In his late teens, he worked the coal mines in Perry County, Ill., and then moved north to Rio, where he was a farm laborer and a Golden Grove Boxer. Charles farmed with his wife and three sons in the Rio, Alexis, Monmouth and Kirkwood area until he retired in 1973. He really enjoyed driving the school bus for the Yorkwood Community School District during this time. After retiring from farming, he worked for the U.S. Government with the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Service in Monmouth for several years. Retiring for a second time, he and Pauline traveled over 80,000 miles in their motor home, caravanning with their friends, seeing most of the United States and Canada. He and his wife were residing at Ridgecrest Village in Davenport.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Henderson Grove. He served as president of the school board of Sunnyside School, Alexis. He started his Masonic journey in 1947 with the Alexandria Lodge in Alexis and then to Viola Lodge 577 AF & AM and was honored as a 60-year member. He was a member of the Mercer and Warren County Farm Bureau, Blue Cross Shield area Advisory Board, lifetime member of the Aberdeen Angus Association and a member of several square dance clubs.
Survivors (and spouses) are his wife, Pauline; three sons, John (Pat) Pheiffer, Davenport, Bob (Sue) Pheiffer, Spring Hill, Kan., and Gary (Nancy) Pheiffer, Rock Island; sister, Betty (Kenneth) Erickson, East Moline; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; and three brothers, Lloyd, Scott and Wayne.
