Corrine Neely Pettit, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on the evening of June 11, 2009.
Born in Fairmont, WV, she was the daughter of Alberta Ramage Neely and Matthew Mansfield Neely, former United States Senator and Governor of West Virginia.
Mrs. Pettit attended Hood College and graduated from West Virginia University.
She was devoted to her husband, who served as Chief of Radiology at Roper Hospital, was on the Board of Commissioners of Roper Hospital for 19 years, and Chairman of the Board for eight of those years. Together Dr. and Mrs. Pettit established the Harold and Corinne Pettit Endowment Fund on behalf of Roper Foundation, Inc. Mrs. Pettit established and funded the Harold Pettit Memorial Fund for Radiology Technicians to provide specialized training to build and maintain the excellence of the Roper Radiology Department. She also served on the Roper Foundation Board of Directors. Mrs. Pettit served with distinction as a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of the Blind for fourteen years, and as its President in 1983-1984. In 2006, the Board expressed its "appreciation, admiration, and affection" for her previous distinguished and dedicated service by electing her Director Emeritus.
Mrs. Pettit served and supported many local charities including the John Ancrum SCPA, the Junior League of Charleston, the College of Charleston, and the Citadel. She was a pioneer in ecology, being one of the first large landowners to establish a conservation easement in favor of the Lowcountry Open Land Trust on her property at Wadmalaw Island to preserve and conserve diverse wildlife habitats.
She was the widow of Dr. Harold S. Pettit. Members of Mrs. Pettit's family include: Ms. Jill Neely of Fairmont, WV, niece; Ms. Paige M. Neely of Atlanta, GA, niece; Dr. Matthew M. Neely, II of Winchester, VA, nephew; Richard F. Neely, Esq. of Charleston, WV, nephew, and three great nephews.
