Thora Christensen, the daughter of Andrew and Elsa Marie (Erickson) Petersen, was born Feb. 3, 1898, at Aaleborg, Denmark. She died Friday.
Prior to her mother's death in 1907, Thora's grandmother Erickson promised to bring her and her brother to America. Thora's father was unable to leave Denmark so when Thora was nine, she came to America with her grandmother and brother, Chris.
She married Oscar Christensen Feb. 3, 1920 at Bethany Lutheran Church.
She attended School District 29, Ruskin, through the sixth grade. After which time she was employed by the Alfred Hansen family to assist with the care of their children. As a young woman she lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked as a house maid. Following their marriage, Oscar and Thora resided on a farm southwest of Ruskin.
A lifelong member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, she served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Altar Guild and an active member of the Ladies Aid. In 1976 they retired from the farm and moved to their home in Ruskin. On Oct. 11, 1994, Thora entered Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Deshler. Oscar joined her Oct. 19. They resided in Parkview together until his death in June 17, 1995. On Feb. 3, 1995 they celebrated 75 years of married life together with many friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Benjamin; grandson, Gary; a great-grandson, Bryce Mooren; and a brother, Chris Petersen.
Survivors include two sons, Willard, Ruskin and Donald, Riceville, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
Services were held Tuesday from the Bethany Lutheran Church, Ruskin, with Pastor bill Watterman officiating.
Interment was in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin.
Megrue-Price Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
