Longtime Anchorage resident Jack Merlin Petersen passed away at Prestige Nursing Home May 27th after several years of illness.

Jack was born in Ogden, Utah, March 22, 1932, to Paul Franklin Petersen and Irene Hales.

Jack graduated from Ogden High School in 1950. He served in the Navy Reserve from 1951 until 1962 on the U.S. Ships Grady, G.A. Johnson, and Naifeh.

Jack married Irene Nadia de Lanskoy, Sept. 26, 1952, in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2012.

In 1952, Jack went to work in Ogden for the W.P. Fuller Paint and Glass Company, which at that
time was the nation's largest glazing contractor. In 1961, he was promoted to a Glass Manager's
position in Boise, Idaho. In March 1965, Fuller transferred him from Boise to Anchorage to help
in the statewide rebuilding effort after the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake.

In 1967, Jack started Commercial Contractors, Inc., which is now one of Alaska's oldest ongoing construction companies. Later, he started Allen and Petersen Company as Alaska's first full-service Home Decorating Center.

Jack was a construction pioneer in Alaska with several thousand of Alaska's largest, tallest,
and most prestigious buildings as a credit to his expertise in glazing and architectural finishes.
Jack's tribute to Alaska is best expressed by the modern shape and look of Anchorage's building skyline.

Jack was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife Irene; his children, Kerry (Jane) Petersen of Keaau, Hawaii, Karen (Cary) Jasper of Anchorage, Chris (Julie) Petersen of Anchorage, Kathie (Kelly) Hudson of Hamilton, Montana, and Kenneth (Kerstina) Petersen of Anchorage; one sister Shirley (Bob) Dunbar of Ogden, Utah; 26 grandchildren, and 41 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Frank James Jasper; and his great-grandson, William Cade Snegirev.
