Mary Elizabeth Perry Layton, 74, of 118 Bluegill Circle, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mrs. Layton was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Perry and Ethel Lane Perry White. A retired certified nursing assistant, she had served as the activities director with Daybreak Adult Services, was a member of Albemarle Baptist Church and the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Perry, Jr. Surviving are her husband, Murriell Q. Layton; two daughters, Anzie Jethro and husband Phillip of Edenton and Teresa Forward and husband William of Edenton; five grandchildren, Catina Byrum, John Wood IV, Laura Harkins, Darrell and Jason Forward; and five great-grandchildren, Luke and Faith Byrum, Clayton, Kaleigh and Caroline Forward. A memorial service will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Greg Brinson. Friends may join the family at the home of her daughter, Teresa, at 108 Rockfish Street, Edenton. A private burial will take place at a later date. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, Va, 23507.
