My name is Laura Varner and I am the curator for the General John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro, IL. I have been researching the deaths of Southern Illinois Civil War soldiers and believe I may have some corrections for the memorial for Pvt. John Wesley Pennington, Jr. It appears that the marker pictured is for Pvt. John W. Pennington, but that his death date should be instead October 25, 1863 in Gayoso Hospital at Memphis, TN.
(As per U.S. Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861 - 1865).

It also appears that this soldier's marital status was single as his mother, Elizabeth Pennington, successfully filed for a pension on December 29, 1888. (As per www.fold3.com pension record index card).
