Published in the Messenger of Truth Issue 18, 1980:

Erna Lydia Bignold was born the oldest daughter of the late Minister and Mrs. John M. Penner, on May 5, 1917, at Steinbach, Manitoba, and died in the Grande Prairie Hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on July 20, 1980, at the age of sixty-three years.

Erna moved with her parents to a farm in the Greenland, Manitoba, area, and it was there that she went to school and grew to womanhood. It was also at Greenland that she responded to the call of God and, upon confession of her faith in Jesus, was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on November 24, 1935. Her faith sustained her to the end. Though not without her struggles, she gave testimony of a special joy and victory during her last days.

Erna trained as a nurse at Children's Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and served in this capacity at Mercy Hospital, Moundridge, Kansas; at Sunchild Mission, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta; and various other places.

On October 19, 1954, at Greenland, Manitoba, Erna and I, Jack Bignold, were united in holy matrimony. We shared the joys and sorrows of life for almost twenty-six years. Into our home were born two sons and two daughters to complete the family. Our home these twenty-six years was on our farm at DeBolt, Alberta, in the Rosedale Congregation at Crooked Creek. Mother will be remembered by us and her many friends for her kindness and caring in many practical ways.

On Wednesday, July 16, Erna suffered a stroke and was taken to the hospital. Early Sunday morning, July 20, she quietly fell asleep. We will miss her keenly, but we are looking forward to meeting her on the resurrection morning.

Left to mourn her departing are me, her husband, Jack Bignold; and sons Leslie and Robert; daughters Barbara and Josephine; one grandson, Jason, of Grande Prairie; her mother, now in the Personal Care Home, Steinbach, Manitoba; two brothers: Alfred and Pauline Penner, of Whitemouth, Manitoba; Clifford and Anita Penner, Uniontown, Alabama; three sisters: Mary and Abe Klassen of Neilburg, Saskatchewan; Florence and Arvid Ensz, of Madrid, Nebraska; Margaret and Milton Toews, of Neilberg, Saskatchewan, and many relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Erna was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine, in 1939, and her father in 1971. Funeral services were held in the Rosedale Mennonite Church, Crooked Creek, Alberta, July 23,1980, with Ministers Lorne Thiessen and Ed Barkman in charge. Graveside services were by Minister Adin Klassen, and interment in the Rosedale Cemetery.
