The funeral for Gladys Arlene Penn Hairston, 68, of 1404 Soapstone Road, Ridgeway, who died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. James Rudd will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville.
Hairston was born in Henry County on March 5, 1939, to Walter Harrison Penn and Sallie Delores Ramey Penn. Her parents preceded her in death.
She had worked as a sales associate at the former Globman's for 27 years, at Leggett, and at Belk for 11 years. She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the deaconess board, the sanctuary and senior choirs, and the Women's Missionary; was on the usher board for 37 years, church treasurer for 30 years and was a former member of the Daughters of Isis.
Surviving are her husband, Lewis Leon Hairston of the home; two daughters, Renee H. Via of Fredericksburg and Chandra H. Shelton of Kettering, Md.; three brothers, Erskine Penn of Detroit, Mich., Jerry Hawkins of Fort Washington, Md., and Alphonso Hawkins of Maryland; two sisters, Willia Mae Thompson of Fredericksburg and Margie Bolden of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandsons.
