Loucinda/Lucinda Penley/Marcus Hogue, also known as "Sinda" (name on son's death certificate). Note: Some said her maiden name is Pendley and some said Marcus. Both are on censuses. Her father was a Marcus and her mother was a Pendley. Hence, confusion. I have found two of her children's marriage records giving mother's name as Pendley. It may be that her parents were not married. However, since both "maiden names" appear on various documents, descendants send edits for Pendley and for Marcus for her maiden name.... so I have put Pendley Marcus in the maiden name slot so all are satisfied. ;-)

Loucinda's Parents: Ellis Dallis Marcus b. 1790 Burke Co, NC. & Nancy Pendley b. 1800 Burke Co, NC d. August 20, 1878 Tennessee.

No marriage record found of Ellis Dallas Marcus and Nancy Pendley/Penley.

Middle name of Clarissa removed, can find no records. Note by Lee Shaw: Clarysa Marcus is not Lucinda. Clarrissa Marcus was daughter of Wilburn Marcus & Demaris Penley. Wilburn was the son of Ellis D Marcus & Catherine Anthony.

Loucinda was unmarried when she gave birth to 2 chlidren listed on the census as "Eustice." The daughter's death certificate lists her father as "Dallas Eastridge." So the two children born to Dallas Eastridge (or Estes) & Loucinda Penley/Marcus are:

1. George Dallas Marcus

2. Nancy L Easteridge/Marcus

She was also unmarried when she gave birth to a 3rd child; fathered by William C. Pruett. Old timers in Western NC told me the father was a "Traveling German salesman" though no record has been found to show that. Son born to this union:

Lucinda/Loucinda married March 12, 1854 to James Lenard Hogue in Cherokee County, NC. After their marriage, they moved to Blount County, Tenn. It is believed that their children were almost all born in Tennessee though some believe some were born in NC... more research is needed to verify.

Nine children would be born to this union:

1.Frances Edista "Destie" Hogue b in Stecoah, Cherokee Co NC (Graham County formed 1872) {m. Robert Marshel "Marsh" Andrews)

2.Henry Jackson Hogue born in Stecoah, Cherokee Co NC (on the 1900 NC Census, it has his birthplace as NC) (m.Mary Ann "Polly" Brown)

3.James Monroe Hogue b. Chilhowee, Blount, TN (m. Mary Lucinda Hicks)

4. Hollin "Hollie" Hogue b. Chilhowee, Blount, TN (m. James Woodrow Welch)

5. Daniel Washington "Sherman" Hogue b. Blount Co., TN (m. Virginia Roxana "Roxie" Welch/Crisp)

Her husband, James Leonard Hogue, was the son of William G. Hogue and Hollin Hogue (maiden name of mother unknown). When the Civil War started,James Lenard Hogue was conscripted into the Confederate Army; he is listed on the Muster Roll of Capt. Cooper's Co. H Walker's Battalion; this later was designated as Company H, Infantry Regiment of Col. Thomas' Confederate Legion:

Hogue, James L. Date Enlisted: July 23, 1862 Residence: Cherokee Co., NC.

He later was mustered into service in the 3rd TN Mounted Infantry Co. C along with 2 brothers (William Monroe Hogue, Daniel Washington Hogue) and one nephew (Carey Jackson Hogue). The family had since moved to Blount Co., TN also. He joined as a private and later was listed as a Sergeant. At the time the family lived there, son Henry and stepson Bill Marcus would recount a day when Confederate soldiers on horseback galloped up to their house, dropped a man on their porch and hurried off. The man turned out to be John Sylvanus "Van" Marcus, Lucinda's brother, who was shot in the heel. Van also fought on both sides and was fighting for the Confederacy at the time Len was fighting for the Union. His niece also recounted that story; she was alive in the years of 2000..

By 1880, after the Civil War, the family had returned to western North Carolina, making their home in the Stecoah Township of Graham County. [note: Graham County was formed in 1872 from a portion of Cherokee County.]

James Lenard Hogue died at his home on 05 Mar 1893, in the Stecoah Township of Graham County, NC. He is interred at Panther Creek Cemetery. The name on his tombstone is "Jas. L. Hogue."

After the death of James, Loucinda moved to Chattooga County, GA where she lived with family member, Nancy Loucinda (Penley) Hogue; the widow of Carey Jackson Hogue, who had died in 1896.

Loucinda died there in 1912 and was interred along with other members of her family in Trion Cemetery.

Dies at Age of 92 Lyerly, Ga., July 5th -

SPECIAL-In the death of Mrs. Lucinda Hogue, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Crisp, in South Trion a few days ago, Chattooga County lost one of its oldest citizens. She was ninety-two years of age. She is survived by thirteen children, six girls and seven boys.

Note: Some researchers are putting Lucinda Cudd as this Lucinda. These are not the same people. This Lucinda is not the one who married James Washington Estes (James born in 1828); if you research these two individuals out as their own people then you will see that James Washington Estes would be 12 years old when George Dallas Estes/Marcus was born.
