|Birth: ||May 20, 1841|
|Death: ||Jul. 18, 1917|
Francis Elizabeth Pendley - she went by Elizabeth - was born in May in Alabama (there is some descrepancy as to her actual birth year, census records vary wildly). She married Thomas Atteberry (Sr.) sometime before 1861. After her husband's death, Elizabeth lived with her son, Thomas J. Atteberry and his family: in 1900 they were living in George's Creek Township, Fayette, Alabama. In that census, she states that she was widowed, had four children, three of which were still living and was born May 1841 (the 1870 census gives 1842). Tom and his wife moved to Dunklin County Missouri and Elizabeth was most probably living with them at the time of her death in 1917. On her death certificate, her son, Tom Atteberry (jr.) gives her birth year as May 22, 1840, however her granddaughter, Alice, who had a better memory said it was May 20. It gives her father's name, which is misspelt as Pedly (should read Pendley) and the cause of death as acute dysentry. Further, it states she was buried at Hornersville Cemetery, Dunklin, Missouri. Her headstone, if she ever had one, is no longer standing. I was told by her granddaughter, Alice Atteberry Carter, that Elizabeth's parents were Jesse and Elizabeth Pendly from Walker, Alabama. This would seem to be coroborated by the fact her son Thomas Jefferson, with whom she lived, buried two of his children - George Alson and Arrora Victora - in the Pendly Family Cemetery in Walker, Alabama with Jessie and Elizabeth Pendly, before he moved his family to Missouri. This would only make sense if they were related and Jesse and Elizabeth Pendly were indeed the greatgrandparents of the Atteberry children who died young. (See; Memorials# 9440691 and # 11309121). The 1870 census lists an Elisabeth Pendly, age 10 with parents Jesse & Elizabeth. The 1860 census shows her with the same parents and siblings as age 3. However, there are people doing the Pendley line that disagree, so if you are doing work on this line, please check into all the evidence and decide for yourself.
