Marcia Pember Brooks, 71, of Portales, died of lung cancer in Albuquerque, N.M. on Oct. 13, 2009. The sudden discovery of her condition in August was stunning news to her family and many friends.

She was born on April 5, 1938 to Virginia and Royce Pember of Slaton, Texas. In 1941, her family relocated to Portales, where her father became actively involved in ranching, farming, real estate and insurance. For many years, they were mainstay members of the First Presbyterian Church of Portales. She established her faith as a child there and as an adult it was her home of worship, where most Sundays she played the piano.

Marcia inherited beauty and grace from her mother, humor from her father and an ornery streak from her maternal grandmother "Nanny". She enjoyed a lifetime of charm and beauty. In an old friend's words, "I fell in love with Marcia when I was 3 years old". Regrettably, her physical health never measured up to the vitality of her spirit. Many knew her as a brave survivor but most knew her as a welcome open door. The loud laughter and passionate chatter that so many enjoyed from a chair in her bedroom is already missed.

She is survived by her son, Greg Hobbs and his family of Albuquerque, N.M.; son, Steven Hobbs and his family of Louisville, Colo.; son, James Hobbs and his family of Richmond, Calif.; and five precious grandchildren, Reid, Addison, Jack, Abigail and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sister, Celia Jenkins and husband Grady of Portales; nieces, Melissa Miller and Marcia Ann McDannel and their families; and stepchildren, Davey Brooks and Christi Mills and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Julie Ann Hobbs; and her granddaughter, Hope Ellen Hobbs.

Memorial services will be officiated by the Reverend Clyde Davis at the First Presbyterian Church of Portales on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m.
