Poet, Playwright. Born in Orléans, France, he was a brilliant writer, won a series of scholarships and passed his baccalauréat in 1891. He entered the Lycée Lakanal, Sceaux, then did military service in (1892-93) and continued his studies in Paris at the Collège de Sainte-Barbe. He was a contributor to the Revue Socialiste, where he published two utopian essays in 1896 and wrote his first prose work that same year. As a poet-playwright Péguy started late in life, with his first book published was on the peasant-soldier-saint “Jeanne d'Arc” (1897). Among his selected works are “Marcel, premier dialogue de la Cité harmonieuse” (1898), “L'Argent” (1901), “Zangwill” (1904), “Notre Jeunesse” (1910), “Victor-Marie, comte Hugo” (1911) and fifteen volumes of “Cahiers de la Quinzaine, (1900-14). He died at age 41 in Villeroy, France.
