Mrs. Mary Ayres, 88, of Brooklyn, IA, a former resident of Deep River, IA, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, IA.
Funeral services for Mary Ayres were held at 10 AM Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Rev. Ben Wilson, Pastor of United Church of Deep River, and Boyd Sparks officiated. The musician was Marilyn Kriegel and the soloist was Carol Dale. Special selections were "I'll Fly Away" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Casket-bearers were Dave Hohenshell, Dennis Henle, Richard Hegarty, Richard Geiger and Dave Zimmerman. Interment was in Golden Rod Cemetery at Deep River.
A memorial fund has been established.
Mary Christine Peebles Ayres was born April 22, 1919, in Camden, Tennessee. Her parents were Robert and Ollie Peebles.
Mary grew up in the Camden, Tennessee area where she received her elementary education. In 1935 she married William Raymond Nunnery and they were the parents of a daughter, Agnes. He died in 1961. In 1965 Mary married Hosea Lee Ayres and he died in 1974.
Mary worked at a garment factory in Tennessee and later was an apartment manager in Detroit, Michigan. In recent years prior to her retirement she provided home care.
Mary lived in California for two years following the death of Hosea, moved back to Iowa in 1975, living in Deep River and Brooklyn.
She was a member of the United Church of Deep River. Mary enjoyed playing cards, eating out on Friday nights with the widow's club and Church activities.
Her parents, her husbands, two step-brothers and a grandchild, Robie Jean Talley, preceded her in death.
Surviving are daughter, Agnes Talley of Deep River; a grandson and his wife, Johnny and Jeanne Talley of Deep River; and two granddaughters, Julie and Jennifer Talley.
