Francis Leroy Pecht, 93 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Friday, August 05, 2011 at Regional West Medical Center.
Francis was born on November 23, 1917 at Shelton, Nebraska. He grew up in Broadwater on a farm. Francis graduated from Broadwater High School in 1935 and taught north of Broadwater. He earned $50.00 per month. After his first year, Francis went to Chadron and then to Greeley to college. Between teaching assignments, he finished his teaching degree at the University of Wyoming, earning a Bachelors degree in Education in 1958.
Francis met Wauneta Unzicker in 1947 while working at Montgomery Ward in Scottsbluff. They were introduced by Wauneta's best friend, Darlene, who was dating Francis' brother, Howard. He transferred to Montgomery Wards in Rock Springs, Wyoming, then worked in a bank there in order to be closer to Wauneta. He taught in Torrington and sold Kirby Vacuums. He was also the head of summer recreation program in Torrington. In 1953, he came back to Gering, taught sixth grade, and worked in a brick yard. He became principal of Bryant elementary School in Scottsbluff, then went to Westmoor as principal. During the summers, he went storm adjusting for Underwriters Adjusting Company. He next went to Harrisburg as principal of the elementary school. He sold Lindsey Water Softeners, Security Insurance, and purchased Big Red Liquor in 1974. The store was sold in the fall 1977. He spent summer of 1978 in Holdredge storm adjusting. In 1979, he was in Chicago, 1980 Loop City and Broken Bow in 1982. He was the secretary at the Moose Lodge from 1982 to 1984, and again from 1987 to 1991.
Francis was previously married to Ruth Petersen. They had two daughters, Sharon and Cleo.
Survivors include his daughters, Franceen McCall of Hemingford, Jan Hawley of Scottsbluff, Sue Maiwald of Denver, Cleo Jacobs of Mullen and Sharon Segura of Denver; granddaughters Jodi and Jill Kelley of Ft. Collins, CO and grandson Paul and Phyllip Segura of Denver and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wauneta, sister Arlene Schaeffer and brother Howard Pecht.
