MRS. R. E. LEE SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS
Pioneer Citizen Dies At Home of Daughter In San Antonio

Mrs. Emma J. Lee, aged 58, pioneer resident of Idabel, and the wife of Attorney Robert E. Lee, died at 2:30 p. m., Sunday, at the home of Attorney and Mrs. Carl Wright Johnson in San Antonio, Texas, after a lingering illness. Although death was not unexpected, the news cast a pall of gloom over the city and good family's many friends over the county were bowed in sorrow.

The remains were shipped to Idabel, arriving Monday afternoon at 3:55 over the Frisco, and escorted to the First Methodist church, of which organization she was a member, where funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. O. Whitworth, amidst a great mass of floral offerings attesting the love and esteem in which this most estimable lady was held.

A choir consisting of Doyle Lawson, M. E. Corbell, Mrs. J. O. Whitworth, Mrs. W. G. Chamblee, Mrs. S. T. Krambes, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Kniseley, and Paul R. Taylor, accompanied by Miss Wilma Russell, sang very sweetly. The remains were then followed by a long concourse of loved ones and friends to Denison cemetery where they were lowered into their earthly home, under direction of Coffey Funeral Home, just as an evening sun was sheddung its last radiance over a sorrowful world.

The pallbearers were: C. E. Bollinger, Pat Ray, Robert Martin, Douglas Hoffman, R. L. Mayer, and Coy Draper.

Deceased is survived by her husband, Robert E. Lee; one daughter, Mrs. Carl Wright Johnson of San Antonio, Texas; three sons, Clyde H. Herndon, McAlester; Sidney J. Herndon, Jr., Tulsa; Leo Herndon, Idabel;

Four brothers, John Pebworth, Robert Pebworth, Louis Pebworth, and James Pebworth; a stepson, Robert E. Lee, Jr., of Idabel.

Mrs. Lee was one of the finest settlers of McCurtain county and had lived in Idabel a number of years. She was well known over the county and had formed some strong friendships that had ripened into love as those friends came to know her better. She had been ill for several months, having gone to some of the best physicians and surgeons in the country for relief, and had undergone several operations. She had been at the home of her daughter in San Antonio for several weeks, hoping that the climate would be of aid in addition to the expert advice of physicians and surgeons in that city. She had just recently started taking radium treatments, but they proved unavailing and the tired, suffering wife and mother was relieved of her pain Sunday afternoon. The many friends of the family join the Gazette in extending sympathy and consolation in their sorrow.
