ROCKLAND – David H. Payson, formerly of Morgan City, Louisiana, died following a brief illness, on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Knox Center for Long Term Care.
Born in Rockland, October 16, 1949, he was the son of Harold "Dynamite" Payson and Amy Rackliff Payson. He was educated in local schools, and was a 1968 graduate of Rockland District High School.
David was a lover of music and the ocean, and was always ready for a good game of chess.
He began his life on the ocean when he began lobstering at the age of thirteen. In his later teens he was a bass guitarist for a local band. For a brief time he worked as a clam digger; then later on as an Able-bodied Seaman for various corporations. His happiest times were when he worked for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute as an Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited.
David is survived by his mother and father; his brothers, Neil Payson and his companion Joan Ralph, Tim Payson and his companion Jaima Fogg, all of South Thomaston; his sisters, Lisa Whitman and her husband Michael of South Thomaston Joy Payson Wyatt and her husband Darrell of Bonneau, South Carolina; his children, Peter Payson and his fiancée Shelley Shorey, Alan Payson all of Rockland; grandchildren, Tina Payson of Rockland, Sierra McDonald of Thomaston; nieces and nephews, Darren Payson, Laura Ritter, Jeffery Payson, Eric Wargo, Andrew Wargo, Lynn Wargo, and great-nephews, Tyler Ritter and Brody Ritter.
A gathering of remembrance will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Div., Inc, One Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086-1240.
