Obituary from the Southern Illinois Record

Geo. W. Payne, 80 years old last March, died at the home of his son, Crawford Payne, in Stanford Tp., Friday, May 16, at 3 p.m.

Mr. Payne was born in Green Co., Ill., March 26, 1839, where he lived until young manhood. He came to Clay Co., sixty years ago, and was actively engaged in farming until recent years.

In 1865 he was married to Miss Susan Williams, and to this union twelve children were born, six of whom survive: Mrs. Stella Hardy of Judsonia, Ark., Leonard, of Louis, Colo., Chas, of Yellow Jacket, Colo., Jonathan, of Paragould, Ark., Benjamin and Crawford, of Clay City. The mother died 34 years ago. The deceased leaves two brothers, Phillip, 84, who lives in Kansas, and Henry, 78, of Sailor Springs. He also leaves 36 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

The G.A.R. will have an additional vacant place in their ranks this Decoration Day, Mr. Payne having fought with the Union Army during the Civil war. During the many years he has been a resident of this community he has won the respect and esteem of all who knew him, and listed as his friends many of the older residents.

The funeral services were conducted at the home of his son, Crawford, Sunday at 1 p.m., and internment at the Smith Cemetery
