Roma Jean Patterson Anderson went to college at the age of 40 with a desire to become a teacher.
"She was inspired by my sister-in-law's teaching career," her son Scott Anderson of Cincinnati said.
Mrs. Anderson, 69, died Wednesday. Services were Saturday, and she was buried at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.
Her career in education began at Hastings Elementary School in Duncanville in 1974. After teaching third grade there for four years, she later taught at Nancy Jane Cochran Elementary School in Dallas. She retired from the Dallas Independent School District in 1984.
Mrs. Anderson was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Cooper, Texas, and attended grade school in Klondike, Texas. After attending Mountain View College, she graduated from Dallas Baptist College, now Dallas Baptist University, in 1974.
She was always there for her family and friends, her son said. "She was the backbone of our family."
Her hobbies included shopping, traveling, gardening, decorating and entertaining family and friends, Mr. Anderson said.
"She was a sincere and genuine, kind, caring and understanding woman," he said.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, Charles Anderson of Dallas; another son, Larry Anderson of Lexington, Ky.; a sister, Ida Myers of Clarendon, Texas; and a granddaughter.
