Rebecca Patterson Henley, affectionately known to the world as "Becky" and to the family as "Little Bit" was born February 10, 1944 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. She was the sixth child of eleven children born to the late Walter J. ("Booger Jack") and the late Geneva Cunningham Patterson. She attended the John Chavis School and graduated in 1961. She joined Zion Hill Baptist Church at an early age, and remained an active member until she left the Cherryville area for Washington, DC immediately after high school graduation. Becky lived out the remainder of her life in the Washington metropolitan area until the Lord came for her on Christmas Day, 1999.
In December 1966, Becky was married to the late Albert Lee Henley, Sr. of Amherst, Virginia. To this union one son was born. For more than thirty years she worked in the food services industry, first in Washington, DC restaurants, and subsequently as a member of the District of Columbia Public School System where she faithfully served for more than twenty-three years. The proud recipient of numerous awards and commendations for meritorious and outstanding services and accomplishments, the Prospect Learning Center for mentally challenged youth will sorely miss their very special "Mrs. Henley." The church family at First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Washington, DC where "Becky" had been a faithful and devoted member since 1977 will also miss her.
Hers was a life of dedication and commitment; to her parents, her husband, her children, her brothers and sisters, her extended family, her profession, her school, her school children, her co-workers, her church, her church family, and her friends. Whenever anything was going on that "Becky" could provide help for assistance with, if you were looking for her up front where all the glamor and attention was, you would not find her. to find her, you would have to go into the kitchen where dishes needed to be washed, or the ham needed to be warmed, or the floor swept, or someone's coat needed hanging...that's where you would find "Becky"...working quietly in the background, serving everyone else to make sure they were comfortable.
How does one ever begin to say "goodbye" or "so long" to everyone's friend?
