|Birth: ||Aug. 25, 1923|
|Death: ||May 14, 1945, Philippines|
Son of Edgar Martin Parnell & Hettie Margaret Dickerson Parnell.
Married Elsie Marie Britt on March 24, 1943.
PFC Edgar Gearl Parnell died while on active duty with the 172 Infantry in World War II. He died in the Luzon Campaign while directing machine gun fire on a hostile position. He was awarded a Silver Star Medal posthumously. PFC Edgar Parnell was originally buried in the Philippines, but his remains were returned to the United States after the war, and a funeral and re-burial was held at Galatia on February 13, 1949.
For 60 years, his grave was marked with an upright white marble military marker with the following inscription:
PFC 172 INF
WORLD WAR II
AUGUST 25, 1923
MAY 14, 1945
In 2009, the family erected a new monument and placed the original marker flat at the foot of the grave. The inscription on the new marker adds his full middle name of Gearl, and it shows that he was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star plus his wife's and son's names are also shown.
