Bettendorf - Celebration of Life services for Grace E. DeGeeter, Bettendorf, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Congregational United Church of Christ, Davenport. The Rev. Katherine Mulhern will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Grace died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at her home. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.
Grace E. Parlier was born Oct. 26, 1911, in Moline, to Carl C. and Mildred (Swanson) Parlier. On Aug. 24, 1938, Grace was united in marriage to August "Gus" DeGeeter in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in August 1963.
Grace and Gus moved to suburban Boston in the early 1950s and opened one of the first franchise Dairy Queen stores there in 1951. After her husband's death, Grace continued to operate the Dairy Queen with help from her family until selling the business in the early 1970s. In her retirement, she lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., until 1999, when she returned to the Quad-Cities to be near her family. Since her retirement, Grace had been involved in generous philanthropic activities. For the past 30 years, she had sewn and donated thousands of new children's outfits to local schools and civic organizations, such as Hoover School, Washington School and Family Services in Davenport and Care-to-Share in St. Petersburg, Fla. Those in receipt of her generosity have known Aunt Grace through her gifts of clothing, time and love. Memorial gifts to Edwards Congregational Church would be welcomed to establish a work which will continue to provide clothing for children.
Those left to honor her memory include two nephews and their families, Louis and Norma Wren, Riverdale, and their children, Christine Wren, Topher Wren and Heather Meseke-Wren, and Robert and Jordie Wren, Friendswood, Texas, and his children, James Wren, Patrick Wren and Kiley Wren; and four great-grandnephews, Jackson Wren, Hunter Wren, Grayson Wren and Lars Meseke-Wren. In addition to her husband, Grace was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Doppler and Gladys Wren.
