Mildred LaVera Parks Braun passed away March 12, 2011, at home in Holden as she wished.
She was born to Herbert and Gartha Mae (Evans) Parks on her mother's birthday, Aug. 23, 1918, in the same house in which her father was born southeast of Coal, Mo.
She married William Russell Braun on April 26, 1940. They farmed near Chilhowee until his stroke. In 1993 they moved to Holden, where he died on May 21, 1997.
LaVera received a teaching certificate from Central Missouri State Teachers College in Warrensburg before teaching near Clinton, in Blairstown and Chilhowee. She farmed with Bill and was proud of her extensive garden, especially her strawberries. She also participated in civic activities serving on the Chilhowee Fair Committee and the Johnson County Extension Advisory Council. She was a leader of the Magnolia 4-H Club for 19 years. LaVera was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church where she served as janitor, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and pianist for over 50 years.
After moving to Holden, she became a member of the Garden Club. LaVera enjoyed traveling to visit her family and having new experiences. She was an avid reader and, in later life, enjoyed following the political process. For most of her adult life, she kept a daily diary that chronicled life on the family farm, key events and daily weather reports.
LaVera is survived by two sons, their spouses, children and grandchildren: Jim and Harriett (Hat Arnold) Braun of Holden, Russell, Danya, Ali and Zack Braun of Lone Jack; Shelli, Charley and Tyler Tilden of Holden; Kelli (Bradley) Tom, and Zack Dilly of Marion, Ind.; and Bill and Bonnie (Fitterling) Braun of Laurel, Md., Joel, Kristen, Brandon and Megan Braun of Urbana, Md.; Jennifer Braun and Matthew Johnson of Chaska, Minn. Survivors also include her brother, Olin Leroy Parks and spouse, Ruby, Windsor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, on May 21, 1997, and by her brother, Maurice Parks and spouse, Irene.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden, with the Rev. Marty Stump of Magnolia Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton.
Pallbearers will be Russell Braun, Joel Braun, Alan Parks, Kevin Parks, Charley Tilden, Matt Johnson and Aaron Burden. Honorary pallbearers will be Rhonda Barwick, Kayla Homfeld, Jackie Stewart, Kim Parker and Peggy Parks.
